A useful check for uncertainty questions

  • Write down whether each uncertainty is absolute (such as ± 0.2 mm) or percentage before combining measurements. For sums and differences, work with absolute uncertainties; for products, quotients and powers, work with percentage uncertainties.
  • When a question uses a graph, do not stop at the best-fit gradient: check whether the uncertainty in the gradient is required, and state the units of the quantity you have found.
