Separate the decay rate from the number of nuclei

  • Activity is the number of decays per second; it is linked to, but is not the same quantity as, the number of undecayed nuclei. On a decay graph, read a half-life as the time for the relevant quantity to halve.
  • In binding-energy questions, convert the mass difference into energy with consistent units, then divide by the number of nucleons only if the question asks for binding energy per nucleon.

Try it in a simulation

  • Binding Energy Lab — Connect mass defect and binding energy per nucleon with energy released in nuclear fission and fusion.
